Clinical
genetic services provide a comprehensive consultative service for the
diagnosis and risk assessment of inherited and congenital disorders.
Genetic disorders occur through all disciplines of medicine, from
preconception to adulthood. A genetics unit employs clinical
geneticists, cultural advisors, administration staff as well as genetic
associates. Genetic associates work with
individuals, couples and families to provide risk assessment, genetic
information and support. Education is provided to families as
well as to other health professionals. An interdisciplinary case
management approach is used and Associates work closely with
consultants from other specialties and with genetic testing
laboratories. Accreditation from the Human Genetics
Society of Australasia is necessary. This requires a minimum of 2 years
supervised clinical practice following a postgraduate Diploma or
Masters in genetic counselling. There are
currently two genetic services in NZ, based in Auckland and Wellington,
with a Christchurch office. The NZ Registry for Familial Bowel
Cancer is based in the Auckland office.
